Misal Shahzad
B.F.A. Graphic Design
I don’t limit myself to labels or materials. I like to think of myself as a collector of moments,
drawn to the act of making. My practices flow from graphic design, painting, and embroidery;
however, it isn’t about the medium but more so the need to hold onto recollections, shaping
and preserving feelings beyond just language.
As a woman of color, I carry inherited stories and customs that guide my material and
composition. Through creation, my aim is to honor these narratives and create a space for
representation and connection. I think of my practices as a breathing record, a memory box
that keeps gathering and holding, personal and public.
I don’t aim for anything I create to provide answers, but invite viewers into a space that feels
intimate. I want my work to evoke curiosity or remain as a gentle reminder that art is never our
own, but something constantly redefined.
Graphic art has deepened my passion for creation, and I am committed to viewing every piece
as an experiment layered with voices that could otherwise disappear. Thus, art isn’t merely
what I do, but how I live, urging me to stay receptive, continue creating, and believe that
significance emerges along the way.
