Katelyn Marcum
B.F.A. Photography
My work focuses on creating carefully composed portraits that feel polished, warm, and
visually engaging. I am drawn to photographing people because of the way small, fleeting
moments can reveal something lasting about a person. Through soft color, controlled
composition, and attention to atmosphere, I aim to create images that feel calm and
intentional, where beauty becomes a way to highlight presence rather than perfection.
Careful planning plays a major role in my process, but so does timing. I often construct or
guide a scene, then wait for subtle expressions or interactions that bring authenticity into the
image. This balance between control and spontaneity allows each photograph to feel both
refined and human. Working with people is central to my practice, as each shoot becomes a
collaboration shaped by my direction as well as the subject’s personality and comfort. I am
especially interested in themes of identity and human connection, exploring how individuals
present themselves and how quiet moments can communicate emotion without exaggeration.
My recent work reflects a period of growth focused on portraiture, stylized shoots, and
editorial-inspired imagery. Experimentation with styling, fashion, and setting allows each
project to develop its own character while still contributing to a consistent visual language.
These choices are not only aesthetic but intentional, helping to shape how the viewer
experiences the subject and understands the mood of the image.
Ultimately, I aim to create photographs that feel complete, where emotion is clear and
immediately understood without needing to be decoded. By combining structure with genuine
human moments, my work invites viewers to slow down and connect with the subject in a quiet
but meaningful way.
