There is a moment in my process when the clay stops listening: edges crack, forms collapse,
and control begins to slip away. Instead of resisting, I move toward that instability. My work
begins in the space between manipulation and release, where the material asserts itself and a
fragile balance emerges between holding on and letting go.
I am drawn to this tension because it creates a dialogue between myself and the material.
Rather than forcing clay into a fixed outcome, I respond to how it moves, dries, and resists in
real time. This approach extends into my experimentation with darkroom photographic paper,
where light, chemistry, and time produce results I cannot fully predict. Surfaces shift, images
emerge unevenly, and the material takes on a life of its own.
These processes mirror one another. In both, the most meaningful results come from
surrendering control and allowing transformation to occur. Influenced by artists who embrace
process, structure, and material energy, I have developed a practice in which intention meets
unpredictability. I am less interested in perfection than in responsiveness, working with
materials as active participants rather than passive tools.
My work holds onto the moment just before collapse, when everything feels in balance but
remains uncertain. In that space, I find honesty: an expression that comes not from control, but
from trust.
