The Idea
A mosaic is an artwork created from small tiles that form a larger picture or pattern, often pieces of history that tell compelling stories from a particular period. Each of the 46 graduating artists featured in our exhibition brings a distinct set of experiences and passions that have shaped their artistic voices, refined their creative processes, and inspired them to expand their creative boundaries. During our college years, our identities have been cut, rearranged, and pieced together as vibrant fragments; they are ever evolving and developing as we transition from our lives in school to career opportunities. The culmination of our personas is currently fusing to become what will inevitably be our collective display of work: a merging of stories, memories, and perspectives that reflect our creative journeys and college experiences. This exhibition is a testament to how distinct voices can converge, creating a harmonious mosaic of creativity, growth, and identity.

Professor Jinchul Kim
Jinchul Kim is a renowned figurative painter and professor of art at Salisbury University. His recent artwork delves into the phenomenology of language and explores the common ground we discover despite the differences in dialects. He often incorporates multilingual text and psychologically intricate cinematic scenes with "ghosts of vision," which disrupt an easy reading of his paintings. His work invokes the liminal stage of college life through this calculated mix as he observes it unfolding around him every day.Â

He received his two MFAs from King Sejong University in Seoul and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He exhibits his work internationally, including shows in Korea, Japan, France, Spain, and the U.S. He has received the Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award twice, in 2006 and 2013.Â

Kim teaches the capstone class, Senior Exhibition, Painting, and Drawing classes as head of the painting and drawing areas. In 2008, he earned the University System of Maryland's highest faculty honor: The Regents Faculty Awards for Excellence in Teaching. He also received the Salisbury University Distinguished Faculty Award in Teaching the same year. In 2022 and 2023, the Fulton School of Liberal Arts recognized him as the recipient of the Fulton Faculty Award in Teaching (2022) and the Excellence in Mentoring Award (2023)
